Army hoists national flag in Shingwari
* Capture of Shingwari area seen as major success for soldiers * 15 Taliban killed, 10 wounded
Staff Report
TANK: Fighter jets pounded Taliban hideouts in South Waziristan on Wednesday, as the army hoisted the national flag in the Shingwari area on the fifth day of Operation Rah-e-Nijat.
Shingwari’s capture has been seen as a major success for the military, tribal analysts said, as this would allow ground forces to advance towards the Chalwashti, Kanniguram and Sam areas. Meanwhile, the army continued its efforts to secure Kotkai – the hometown of “suicide bomber mentor” Qari Hussain. “Soldiers have captured the Taliban positions around Kotkai, securing their hold over the area,” sources in the political administration said on condition of anonymity. “We are encircling the Kotkai village,” they added.
Latest casualties: Also on Wednesday, an Inter-Services Public Relations press release stated that, in the past 24 hours, 15 Taliban had been killed and 10 injured after jet fighters and long-range artillery struck Taliban positions in the Badar, Sam, Sararogha, Nanoo, Ladah and Makeen areas. It said four soldiers, including an officer, had been martyred in the same period.
